A Greater London Authority
EDM number 344 in 1996-97, proposed by Tony Banks on 11/12/1996.
That this House notes the recent opinion polls for the Association of London Authorities and the Evening Standard which showed that around 75 per cent. of Londoners, including over 60 per cent. of Tory voters want a strategic authority for the capital; draws attention to the remarkable consistency of Londoners' views both during the campaign against the abolition of the Greater London Council and in the decade since; calls upon Her Majesty's Government to acknowledge that Greater London Council abolition was an act of political spite driven through by the then Prime Minister, the present Baroness Thatcher, againsts the expressed wishes of an overwhelming majority of Londoners; and looks forward to the election of the Labour Party, which has given a firm pledge to restore London's strategic authority in the first year of a new Parliament.
This motion has been signed by a total of 45 MPs.
