Government Financial Support For Bedfordshire

That this House notes with concern the enormous pressures placed upon the people of Bedfordshire resulting from the Government's Local Government Financial Settlement for 1997-98 and from the manner in which the Government is implementing the local government reorganisation in the county; further condemns the imposition through capping of expenditure cuts of ú15 million in new Bedfordshire's budget which will devastate services, coupled with oppressive increases in the council tax of 21 per cent. on the county council precept; and calls upon the Secretary of State for the Environment to reconsider the council's standard spending assessment, rate support grant and notional spending level.
