Dr. Gwyn Jones And The BBC Broadcasting Council For Wales

EDM number 291 in 1996-97, proposed by Rhodri Morgan on 03/12/1996.

That this House welcomes the much-delayed departure from public life in Wales of Dr Gwyn Jones, sacked by the Secretary of State for Wales towards the end of his term as Chairman of the Broadcasting Council for Wales, carrying with it a seat on the BBC Board of Governors and the Board of S4C the Welsh Fourth Channel Authority; notes that the new public appointments procedure was utilised to interview Dr Jones and two other candidates for the BBC Chairmanship and that the outgoing Chairman was subsequently informed that his term of office was not to be renewed; and regards it as a welcome sign that the effects of Lord Nolan's committee are already beginning to bear fruit in the cleaning up of public life and in preventing specifically the re-appointment of Dr Gwyn Jones, who should never have been appointed in the first place, given the two critical reports about his stewardship of the Welsh Development Agency between 1988 and 1993.

This motion has been signed by a total of 20 MPs.
