Registration Of Chimney Sweeps
EDM number 271 in 1996-97, proposed by Alan W Williams on 27/11/1996.
That this House notes that a young couple nearly lost their lives from carbon monoxide poisoning in Capel Hendre, Ammanford, on 18th October, because of a blocked chimney, that this had been cleaned by a chimney sweep in May 1996 but that after the accident a second cleaning produced three sackfulls of soot; notes that there is no professional body to maintain standards for chimney sweeps and that anyone can set himself up in business as a chimney sweep simply by buying a set of brushes; and calls on the Department of Trade and Industry to set up a national registration scheme for chimney sweeps analogous to the CORGI scheme for gas engineers.
