DRIVERS' SKILLS IN THE COMMERCIAL VEHICLE INDUSTRY
EDM number 255 in 1996-97, proposed by Alice Mahon on 26/11/1996.
That this House notes that commercial vehicle driving instructors do not have to be trained or registered by statute, that there is no requirement for a driver to be re-tested if she or he has not driven for some time, that drivers are not tested on laden commercial vehicles and that some drivers are not adequately trained, assessed and monitored by employers; also notes that commercial vehicle mechanics do not have to receive statutory training before working on a commercial vehicle, and that some mechanics are not adequately trained, assessed and monitored by employers; welcomes the work by the BRAKE Parliamentary group and its supporting safety conscious road transport company members in highlighting these concerns; and calls on the Government to address the lack of statutory skilling of commercial vehicle drivers and mechanics as a matter of urgency.
