Tourism To Burma

EDM number 226 in 1996-97, proposed by Denis MacShane on 20/11/1996.

That this House endorses the appeal of the nobel Laureate, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, urging the British people not to support the Burmese military junta by travelling to Burma as tourists or to support in any way the efforts by the Burmese military dictators to promote 1997 as Visit Myanmar Year; deplores the use of forced labour to build up tourist sites in Burma and the forcible relocation of hundreds of thousands of people to provide space for new hotel complexes in order to develop the SLORC junta's policy of promoting tourism; and appeals to travel agents not to promote Burma as a normal Asian tourist destination despite the country's great beauty and welcoming people until such time as the democratic rights of the Burmese people are respected.

This motion has been signed by a total of 67 MPs.
