Proportional Representation

EDM number 22 in 1996-97, proposed by George Foulkes on 23/10/1996.

That this House notes that a system of proportional representation has resulted in the advance of the far right Freedom Party in Austria, putting it in a powerful position in the running of that country; notes that in New Zealand proportional representation has left the country without an elected government for a long period while parties try to work out deals behind closed doors on how the country will be governed; and believes any system of proportional representation for election to the House would be detrimental to democracy.
