The Red Lion

EDM number 142 in 1996-97, proposed by John Cummings on 05/11/1996.

That this House expresses concern over the constant blatant profiteering by Allied Domecq, owners of The Red Lion, Parliament Street; notes that beer prices have been raised three times since January, massively in excess of the rate of inflation, at a time when beer tax and VAT has remained constant as have wages and conditions applied to staff in The Red Lion who take the brunt of complaints from customers over the price rises; recognises that this recent price rise comes at a time when the Parliamentary Beer Club is pressing Her Majesty's Government to lower beer tax and act against smuggled cheap imported beer in support of the brewing industry; believes that constant profiteering by the industry will encourage more smuggling of cheap French beer to be bought by the long suffering pub customer; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to question the action of Allied Domecq and other greedy brewers who continue to exploit their customers whilst complaining to honourable Members about the precarious position of their industry.
