Firework Safety (Imported Fireworks)

That this House welcomes the more thorough approach being adopted by the Health and Safety Executive to the authorization and classification of firework imports since the honourable Member for Birmingham, Northfield raised the presence of dangerous imported fireworks on the British market in an adjournment debate on 1st November 1995; is nevertheless concerned that the effectiveness of such work will be undermined unless the testing of imported fireworks is stepped up; and therefore calls on the Government to ensure the routine testing of all consignments of firework imports at the point of entry to the United Kingdom to ensure that many dangerous imports are discovered before they are allowed to go on sale to the general public.
