Coral Racing
EDM number 114 in 1996-97, proposed by Rhodri Morgan on 30/10/1996.
That this House deplores the duplicity of Coral Racing in refusing to pay Terry O'Callaghan of Cardiff the ú259,200 he won on a football bet of ú54.50 placed and accepted by Coral's betting shop at The Hayes, Cardiff, on 10th September, giving the excuse that the shop manager had failed to photograph the betting slip, although Mr O'Callaghan had received a full date and time-stamped receipt, considers that Coral Racing compounded their duplicity by claiming for several weeks that they could not confirm the validity of the bet, because the shop manager was sick and could not be interviewed and then subsequently admitting to Sporting Life on 9th October that in fact they had twice interviewed and taken a written statement from the shop manager, and further admitting to Sporting Life on 14th October that they had been grossly negligent in not processing the bet properly; and calls on the licensing magistrates in Cardiff and elsewhere to suspend Coral Racing's betting shop licences until it re-establishes itself as a professional betting shop organisation.
