Woomera And Christmas Island Atomic Test Veterans
EDM number 98 in 1995-96, proposed by Edward O'Hara on 22/11/1995.
That this House is reminded that between 1952 and 1958 22,000 British service personnel were exposed without protective clothing or procedures to the radiation fall out from the British atomic bomb tests at Woomera and Christmas Island; notes the accumulated evidence since then of radiation related diseases suffered by these veterans; is of the view that by its decision to extend the 30 year secrecy rule on documents related to this atomic test programme the Government is exposed to the accusation of a cover-up; and therefore calls upon Her Majesty's Government to make all documents related to this aspect of the programme available to a public inquiry which can establish once and for all the effects of the programme on the health of the veterans who participated in it.
