Quality Of Urban Air

That this House is concerned by the Government-instigated Quality of Urban Air Review Group (QUARG) report that states Britain regularly exceeds its own limits for particulate emiss ions from diesel vehicles; notes that the Government's recommended standard of 50 microgrammes per cubic metre of air on a 24-hour average was violated on 139 days from 1992 to 1994 and that such levels of emissions are detrimental to the health and well-being of urban populations by worsening heart and respiratory conditions; and believes that current measures aimed at curbing air pollution are insufficient and that stringent additional controls, as recommended by QUARG, are essential if officially recommended targets are to be met.
