Amnesty International: Reports On Torture Worldwide

That this House is appalled that torture has reached epidemic proportions in more than 40 countries, and outbreaks have been reported in 60 others, according to Amnesty International's report, A Glimpse of Hell; Reports on Torture Worldwide, published today; urgently calls on the United Kingdom Government to step up pressure on such states, in particular China, Israel, Kenya, Mexico and Turkey, to cease such practices; and notes the remarks of the Director of Amnesty International (UK) that, despite this record, the United Kingdom Government maintains friendly relations with torturing governments, sponsors trade and investment with them and in many cases offers training to their police and armed forces, even though these are the people most likely to commit torture.

This motion has been signed by a total of 70 MPs.
