Szmul Zygielbojm
EDM number 853 in 1995-96, proposed by John Heppell on 08/05/1996.
That this House welcomes the memorial plaque unveiled in London on 12th May by the Polish Ambassador to commemorate Szmul Zygielbojm, the representative of the Jewish Workers' Bund on the Polish Government in exile, who after a year of lobbying government ministers and officials, ambassadors and the press, urging exceptional action to save European Jewry from extermination, took his own life in London in May 1943 as a final protest against the indifference the world was showing allowing the Nazis to slaughter the Jews of Europe; and hopes that the perpetuation of his memory will serve as a reminder of the horrors inflicted by fascism and of the courage of those people and movements who have resisted and are resisting racism and fascism.
