70th Anniversary Of The General Strike
EDM number 834 in 1995-96, proposed by Harry Barnes on 02/05/1996.
That this House notes the 70th anniversary of the General Strike of 1926 and the heroic efforts of the TUC and large sections of the working class to give solidarity to the miners in their struggle to resist pay cuts and increased working hours; further notes that the restrictive trade union laws introduced by the Conservatives in the last 17 years make such actions illegal today; and believes that a new framework of rights for workers to join and participate in trade union activities, as a fundamental human right of association, is needed to ensure that working people are able to tackle the new insecurities of work in a globalised economy.
