Higher Education In Yorkshire And Humberside

That this House recognises the outstanding quality of higher education in the United Kingdom and the internationalreputation of Yorkshire and Humberside's higher education institutions; acknowledges the vital role that those institutions play in the local and regional economy; notes that the Government has introduced a cut of 4.6 per cent. for higher education institutions in Yorkshire and Humberside this year, and has announced proposals for cuts in higher education funding in England and Wales of 3.7 per cent. for next year; expresses concern that these cuts could have a severe impact on the quality of teaching and research and could have detrimental consequences to the local economy with the possible loss of jobs; and strongly urges the Government to reconsider its proposals for furthercuts in higher education spending.
