Fish Oil Derived From Non-Sustainable Industrial Fisheries

That this House congratulates the companies Unilever and Sainsbury plc for their public commitment to cease the use of fish oil derived from non-sustainable industrial fishing in European waters; calls upon other companies to follow suit and to recognise the threat posed by industrial fishing to both wildlife and commercial fisheries; and calls on the Government to take urgent action to end such practices both in UK waters and internationally through the forthcoming interim ministerial meeting on the North Sea (March 1997 Bergen) and to reform the common fisheries policy to give greater emphasis to sustainable fisheries management.
