Anniversary Of The Armenian Massacre

That this House recalls with sadness the 81st anniversary of the beginning of the Armenian Genocide, which falls on 24th April 1996, when an estimated 1.5 million Armenians were systematically exterminated by the Turkish Government; condemns Turkey's persistent harassment of its minorities such as the Armenians, Syriacs and the Greeks, despite the fact that it aspires to join the European Community and other Western organisations; calls on the government of Turkey to acknowledge its role in the Armenian Genocide and to ensure that gross violations of human rights against minorities in Turkey today are ended and that the illegal blockage of the Republic of Armenia by Turkey is completely lifted; and encourages Her Majesty's Government to urge the Turkish Government to take such action.
