Safety Of Oral Contraceptives

EDM number 763 in 1995-96, proposed by Simon Hughes on 19/04/1996.

That this House notes with concern but little surprise the the Committee for Proprietary Medicinal Products announced on Friday 19th April that no action is needed on third generation oral contraceptives; is deeply concerned that parliamentary Answers have shown that the Committee on Safety of Medicines was not presented with the necessary finalised information at its meeting on 13th October 1995, and that the whole timetable was unnecessarily rushed; notes that there is still no new evidence of increased risk from these contraceptives; concurs with leading scientists that there was no medical need to warn 1.5 million women to stop taking these contraceptives; is deeply concerned at the thousands of unwanted pregnancies and abortions that have directly resulted from this announcement; and calls on the Secretary of State for Health to come to the House at the earliest possible opportunity to explain the actions of his Department.

This motion has been signed by a total of 14 MPs.
