First Anniversary Of The Death Of Iqbal Masih

EDM number 723 in 1995-96, proposed by Neil Gerrard on 16/04/1996.

That this House remembers with admiration Iqbal Masih, former child labourer and children's rights campaigner, shot dead a year ago on 16th April 1995 aged 12 years; is concerned that the Bonded Labour Liberation Front with whom he campaigned is being persecuted; asks the Government to convey to the Pakistan Government its profound concern that a full impartial investigation into Iqbal's death has still not been instituted; notes that a high court judge's criticisms of the police investigation have been ignored; and requests that the unjust charges against BLLF President Ehsan Ullah Khan and Zafaryab Ahmed be withdrawn, that BLLF equipment, archives and funds be restored, that Iqbal's mother receives the compensation promised by the Prime Minister of Pakistan and that Pakistani law abolishing child labour be implemented.
