Future Of Gaelic Broadcasting
EDM number 695 in 1995-96, proposed by Hector Monro on 01/04/1996.
That this House applauds the success of Comataidh Telebhisein Gaidhlig, the Gaelic Television Committee, in funding the production of a wide range of high quality Gaelic television programming through its application of the Gaelic Television Fund since its creation in 1992; notes that opinion polls show that more than two million Scots watch Gaelic programmes each year; acknowledges the value of this Government initiative which has benefited the economy by creating the equivalent of 300 full-time jobs and given a significant boost to the renewal of Gaelic language and culture; notes that the Gaelic television service faces growing difficulties in sustaining its success in a changing broadcasting environment due to the Committee's lack of control over the scheduling of programmes and its reduced funding; and, therefore, asks the Government to give further consideration to the basis of the future funding of the Committee to examine ways of giving the Committee greater ability to influence the scheduling of programmes and to consider creating a specific Gaelic broadcasting organisation with powers similar to those of S4C in Wales.
