Independent Judicial Inquiry Into Bse And Cjd
EDM number 676 in 1995-96, proposed by David Hinchliffe on 27/03/1996.
That this House, noting that certain bodies such as the Spongiform Encephalopathy Advisory Committee, which is responsible for offering expert advice on BSE and the possible connection with CJD, have restricted their own sources of scientific information by the selective acceptance of data from a limited range of scientists, calls for the immediate establishment of an independent judicial inquiry to examine the availability of information concerning both BSE and CJD since their identification in the United Kingdom and the subsequent use of such information, to examine the reasons why specific e vidence clearly indicating the likelihood of a major public health risk was not accepted by SEAC and the Government and to examine the relationship between bodies such as SEAC and Government departments and to make urgent recommendations on steps that must be taken to minimise risk to public health in the future.
