Ethical And Social Implications Of Cloning
EDM number 618 in 1995-96, proposed by David Alton on 14/03/1996.
That this House commends The Sunday Times for exposing the failure of the Roslin Institute, Edinburgh, to reveal the full details of their experiments into cloning; records its concern that of the five lambs which they cloned, one grew to twice the normal size in the womb and had to be delivered by caesarean section, that three animals died soon after birth and had malformed organs and that four of the five were 20 per cent. larger than they should have been; applauds Brian Appleyard's expose, in the same newspaper, of the implications of cloning and molecular genetics for humanity; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to initiate a wide-ranging debate into the ethics and implications of these developments.
