Sky Tv Charges To Social And Sports Clubs
EDM number 599 in 1995-96, proposed by Hugh Bayley on 12/03/1996.
That this House expresses concern at the steep increase in subscription fees charged by Sky TV to social and sports clubs; notes that the new fees are based on the non-domestic rateable value of the whole of a club's premises, even though the area in which television is available may comprise only a small part of the total floor area of its premises, as is the case in the York Railway Institute where its bar in which its television is situated comprises only 17 per cent. of the club's floor area; notes that Sky increased York Railway Institute's subscription fee by 143 per cent. which forced the club to cancel its subscription; recognises that many sports and social clubs are non-profit making members' clubs paying commercial rents for their premises; and calls on Sky TV to review its subscription policy so that charging is based on the floor area of a social or sports club in which television can be viewed.
