Police Funding In Scotland

EDM number 583 in 1995-96, proposed by Roseanna Cunningham on 06/03/1996.

That this House is dismayed at the most recent figures on funding for the police in Scotland; notes that capital spending in Scotland in 1995 amounted to ú1,715 per officer compared with ú2,125 in England and Wales, a difference of 24 per cent.; further notes that revenue spending in the same period shows a similar disparity standing at ú50,468 per officer in England and Wales with only ú43,332 per officer in Scotland, a difference of 16.5 per cent.; calls on the Secretary of State for Scotland to explain why the Scottish police are apparently deserving of so much less than their English and Welsh counterparts; declares that an increase in funding would undoubtedly result in more officers on operational duty, the employment of more civilian staff and greater computer support; and joins with the Association of Scottish Police Superintendents in calling for an independent review into funding of the police in Scotland.

This motion has been signed by a total of 12 MPs.
