Crack Computer Theft Campaign

EDM number 512 in 1995-96, proposed by Nigel Jones on 26/02/1996.

That this House congratulates Computer Weekly for launching its 'Crack Computer Theft' Campaign; notes that computer theft is costing UK industry ú1 billion a year; is concerned by the reported statement of Peter Woodward, head of information systems at Westminster City Council that every local education authority in London has been hit by computer theft; supports the campaign's recommendations to computer users to take every precaution to prevent losses, including adequately securing and locking premises, fixing computer cabinets to the floor or desks, and identifying components with security markings; believes that manufacturers of computer chips should identify each chip by a unique printed or laser-etched serial number; and calls on the Government and local authorities to support the campaign by issuing guidelines to all public offices to prevent theft and save taxpayers' money.

This motion has been signed by a total of 23 MPs.
