Funeral Of Alton Manning

EDM number 509 in 1995-96, proposed by Harry Cohen on 26/02/1996.

That this House acknowledges with sadness the funeral of 33-year-old Alton Manning on 23 February in Birmingham; sends condolences to his family and friends; notes that he died in HM Prison Blakenhurst and that pathologist Dr Ian R. Hill, in his preliminary report following an independent autopsy, confirmed that death was caused by asphyxiation and that, in his opinion, death was due to the way in which Mr Manning was handled by prison officers; notes that he also drew parallels with the death of Joy Gardner; considers that the Prison Service and the Government have many questions to answer about Mr Manning's death; and considers that their hands are now seriously stained by this and so many other suspicious deaths in custody.

This motion has been signed by a total of 15 MPs.
