White Ribbons And Peace

EDM number 500 in 1995-96, proposed by Harry Barnes on 22/02/1996.

That this House notes that on Sunday 25th February at 3 p.m. there were simultaneous and planned rallies in Dublin, Belfast and London, in various other towns in Ireland and Britain as well as New York; further notes that the London rally took place at 3 p.m. on the steps of St. Martins in the Field, Trafalgar Square and was attended by a wide variety of British and Irish people, trade unionists, peace campaigners and celebrities; believes that the simple and straightforward slogans of: Stop the Killing, and Ceasefire - Give us Back our Peace perfectly capture the mood of the vast majority of British and Irish people; commends the peace campaigners for having adopted the white ribbon as a symbol of their campaign; urges those who could not attend the London rally to organise local vigils and rallies and for all to wear the white ribbon; and believes that such initiatives demonstrate that the vast majority of British and Irish people demand that the IRA return to their ceasefire and stop the killing before more innocent lives are blown apart.

This motion has been signed by a total of 21 MPs.
