KING HINTSA'S HEAD

EDM number 496 in 1995-96, proposed by Tony Banks on 22/02/1996.

That this House notes with sadness the sofar unsuccessful search by Chief Nicholas Gcaleka to find the head of his great great uncle Hintsa King of the Xhosa people, killed by a British army officer in 1835; believes that it is unacceptable for body parts brought into the United Kingdom, as a result of colonial rule, to remain on public display or in storerooms in museums and other public and private institutions; and calls for support from Her Majesty's Government to assist Chief Gcaleka in locating King Hintsa's head and a policy to return all body parts to the countries of origin when requested.

This motion has been signed by a total of 16 MPs.
