Mohamed Al Fayed And The Honorouble Member For Montgomery

EDM number 466 in 1995-96, proposed by David Evans on 20/02/1996.

That this House notes that Mohammed Al Fayed was forced to admit, in settlement of a libel action in the High Court on Friday 15th February, that he had lied in publicly accusing the former Deputy Chairman of Harrods, Christoph Bettermann, of fraud and embezzlement of millions of dollars from Fayed companies, further notes that, as a direct consequence of Fayed's lies, Betterman was prosecuted in Dubai on criminal charges to which he was subsequently acquitted; further notes that Fayed was obliged to pay fix figure libel damages to Bettermann and costs amounting in all to an estimated ú1,000,000; and, in veiw of the foregoing further evidence of Fayed's untruthfulness, calls on the honourable Member for Montgomery to explain why he is so enthusiastic an apologist for Fayed in the House.
