Mental Illnesses
EDM number 435 in 1995-96, proposed by David Atkinson on 14/02/1996.
That this House welcomes the report published by the Royal College of Psychiatrists into homicides and suicides by mentally ill people which shows that further urgent work is needed to deliver good mental health services across the whole country; urges the Government to respond positively to the report's recommendations; reminds the Government that schizophrenia is the most common, chronic and disabling of the severe mental illnesses; notes that a high percentage of homeless people appearing in magistrates' courts are suffering from schizophrenia; welcomes the availability of new, more effective drugs for the treatment of schizophrenia; recognises that effective care requires an integrated support network between psychiatrists, general practitioners, community psychiatric nurses and social services; and calls on the Government to work with the 16 mental health trust chief executives on new proposals for an Inner City Mental Health Care Initiative.
