Eaton Green
EDM number 43 in 1995-96, proposed by John Heppell on 15/11/1995.
That this House is concerned at the further revelations in the Guardian and on World in Action on Monday 6th November 1995, that Eaton Green, a professional gunman from Kingston, Jamaica was shielded from the Nottinghamshire Police by London detectives who failed to disclose vital intelligence and then fed misleading information to the Crown Prosecution Service; notes that immigration law was disregarded by immigration officers who accepted spurious arguments from Scotland Yard and gave Eaton Green permanent leave to remain in the United Kingdom although he had no legal right to do so, allowing him to spend two years dealing in crack cocaine, robbing other dealers and using firearms on the street while acting as a paid informant for the Metropolitan Police, before his arrest by Nottinghamshire Police resulted in him being jailed at his second trial for six years for his part in the armed robbery of 150 people at a Nottingham party; is further concerned at the actions of senior Scotland Yard officers who attempted to have his trial aborted before the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Attorney General intervened to insist it go ahead; further notes that the Metropolitan Police actions caused the abandonment of his first trial at a cost to the public purse of ú750,000; does not believe that Scotland Yard conducting what is now their third internal inquiry is an adequate response to issues of such seriousness; and therefore calls upon the Home Secretary to set up a full independent inquiry into these matters.
