Franks Report And The Media
EDM number 422 in 1995-96, proposed by Archy Kirkwood on 14/02/1996.
That this House recalls the Franks Report into Argentina's invasion of the Falkland Islands; recalls that the report's conclusion was reported as 'absolving' the then Prime Minister, the Right honourable Margaret Thatcher and her Cabinet, of any blame for allowing the invasion whilst the substantive report suggested that the Thatcher Government was guilty of serious negligence on a number of counts; remembers the skill of the Downing Street Press Secretary, Bernard Ingham, in managing to dupe the Press into believing that the report did not damn the Government; and urges that in future the media ensure that their reports reflect the whole contents of any official inquiry report rather the areas highlighted by the Government Press Office.
This motion has been signed by a total of 18 MPs.
