Criminal Injuries Compensation

EDM number 387 in 1995-96, proposed by Alan Meale on 06/02/1996.

That this House notes with regret Her Majesty's Government's decision to replace the current Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme with a tariff type scheme; recalls that attempts in 1994 to impose such a scheme were held to be unlawful; believes that the mechanism proposed is unfair to the victims of crime as it does not include in it the right to full compensation for lost earnings, special provision for victims of sexual assault, proper compensation for those injured trying to stop crime, sufficient time for the submission of claims, index linked levels of compensation and independent control of the management of the scheme; and supports the campaign being fought by the TUC, the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers and local authorities against Her Majesty's Government's intention on this matter.

This motion has been signed by a total of 64 MPs.
