Canadian Seal Killings

EDM number 376 in 1995-96, proposed by Tony Banks on 05/02/1996.

That this House is appalled to learn of the Canadian Goverment's decision to allow up to 250,000 harp and hood seals to be slaughtered this year; condemns without reservation plans to re-introduce factory ships to the killing grounds; notes the provision of subsidies to encourage fishermen to take seals, the sale of seal penises as alleged aphrodisiacs and the inevitable high level of cruelty involved in the clubbing and shooting of the animals; calls upon the Canadian Goverment to recognise the deep sense of revulsion felt by many people in both the United Kingdom and Canada; urges the Canadian Government to halt immediately this totally unjustified large scale exploitation of wildlife; and calls upon the United Kingdom supermarkets to cease buying Canadian fish products until Canadian fishermen stop killing the seals.
