Norplant Contraceptive Implants
EDM number 28 in 1995-96, proposed by John Heppell on 15/11/1995.
That this House is appalled by the disclosures of the BBC2 Horizon programme, broadcast Monday 6th November 1995, which highlighted the testing of contraceptive implants on women in the Third World; is further concerned at the high frequency of side effects of the implants with 80 per cent. of women returning to the medical profession after implant complaining of side effects and 50 per cent. requiring extraction of the implant before the five years intended andsometimes requiring plastic surgery; are further concerned that implants are not carried out by specially trained doctors which the supplying company for Norplant claim they specifically requested when applying for a licence; congratulates the Norplant Action Group, who are seeking compensation from the suppliers of Norplant, in calling for revision of the information made available to those considering implants explaining the possibility of side effects and the difficulties of removal of implants; and asks that the licence is revoked which allows implants in the United Kingdom until these matters are resolved.
