Ceasefire In Turkey

EDM number 232 in 1995-96, proposed by Gordon Prentice on 19/12/1995.

That this House wecomes the announcement of a unilateral ceasefire in Turkey by the PKK Leader, Abdullah Ocalan; calls on the Turkish Government to reciprocate by ceasing all attacks on the PKK and the Kurdish community; urges the Turkish Government to seek a peaceful solution to the Kurdish issue; believes that the statement by Abdullah Ocalan, that the PKK does not wish to change Turkey's borders but rather to bring about the co-existence of the Turks and the Kurds, should provide a basis for dialogue; believes that the recent decision to admit Turkey to the European Customs Union has made the Kurdish question a European issue; and calls upon the European Union and its member governments to exert all possible pressure on the Turkish Government to ensure that negotiations take place and if necessary to provide independent observers to monitor the cease-fire.
