Treatment Of Leg Ulcers By The Nhs
EDM number 194 in 1995-96, proposed by Stuart Randall on 11/12/1995.
That this House notes that leg ulceration is a chronic condition that affects about 400,000 people or 600 per parliamentary constituency and that older people are particularly at risk; it notes also that patients suffer considerable pain and discomfort, that leg ulcers are often large and unpleasant wounds, with the effect of restricting mobility, and that much of the current treatment in the community is ineffectual; further notes that top health experts such as Professor Charles McCollum and Professor Nick Bosanquet have demonstated that the Smith and Nephew high technology four-layer bandage can improve healing rates by a factor of three and at the same time produce savings for the NHS of ú250 million per annum; regrets that bureaucracy in the NHS is preventing these huge benefits from accruing for both the NHS and patients; and calls on the Governemnt to take immediate action to make the four layer bandage system available in the community.
