Trade In Mahogany
EDM number 19 in 1995-96, proposed by Gerry Steinberg on 15/11/1995.
That this House calls upon furniture retailers, DIY stores, local authorities, timber merchants and architects in Durham and throughout the United Kingdom to stop dealing in mahogany since that dealing has such a devastating effect on the environment and local peoples of Brazil, Africa, Bolivia and Central America; calls upon the Government to place a moratorium on the importation of Brazilian and other Latin American mahogany until such a time as supplies can be guaranteed to originate from environmentally friendly and socially acceptable sources; and further calls for the listing of African mahoganies under the Convention of Trades in Endangered Species and greater enforcement of protection currently given to Cuban and Honduran mahoganies under CITES.
