Poverty Amongst Pensioners

That this House congratulates pensioners' groups and Age Concern in organising a highly successful demonstration followed by a meeting in Liverpool on the plight of pensioners; poin ts out that the real value of the pension has fallen by ú20.60 for a single pensioner and by ú33 for a couple since the pension ceased to be linked to average earnings; further notes that the ú10 Christmas bonus would have reached ú67.15 had it remained tied to average earnings; and calls on the Government to increase pensions and the Christmas bonus to the levels they would have been at if they had remained linked to average earnings to eliminate poverty amongst pensioners.
