Stratford International Passenger Station
EDM number 126 in 1995-96, proposed by Stephen Timms on 28/11/1995.
That this House welcomes the Channel Tunnel Rail Link Bill Select Committee's view that 'a station at Stratford capable of handling international traffic is desirable both in the national interest and in the interest of regenerating eastern London'; endorses the Select Committee's recommendation that a 'long box' should be built at Stratford to allow construction of an international passenger station in the heart of East London; believes that Stratford offers a commercially viable option, with any additional costs of such a station matched by increased land revenue; notes that Stratford is ideally placed within the South East public transport network to act as a gateway to London, Essex and East Anglia; recognises that Stratford fulfils all the Government's criteria as an area ripe for development and that an international station would boost economic activity in the area; thereby contributing towards the sustained regeneration of eastern London; and urges the Government to authorise an international and domestic station at Stratford to be built at the same time as the Channel Tunnel Rail Link.
