Conduct Of The Deputy Prime Minister And Export Of Alvis Tanks To Indonesia

EDM number 1216 in 1995-96, proposed by Diana Maddock on 24/07/1996.

That this House deplores the Indonesian Government's use of Saracen armoured personnel carriers to suppress peaceful civilian protestors in Ujung Pandang, South Sulawesi; expresses the utmost concern that the military vehicles in question were manufactured by Alvis and licensed for export by Her Majesty's Government; recalls the assurances of the Deputy Prime Minister given when he was President of the Board of Trade that all military exports to Indonesia included a thorough assessment of the likelihood that such exports might be used for the purposes of internal repression;urges Her Majesty's Government to condemn the actions of the Indonesian Government in the strongest terms; and calls for an immediate moratorium on the sale of all military and police equipment to Indonesia.

This motion has been signed by a total of 17 MPs.
