Climate Change

EDM number 1193 in 1995-96, proposed by John Greenway on 17/07/1996.

That this House notes the growing concern amongst the world's insurance companies about the huge costs which will arise if insufficient international action is taken to curb man made climate change, costs which will eventually fall on many businesses and individuals; notes the many other concerns in this country about the economic and ecological effects of climate change which is increasingly believed to be already occurring; therefore welcomes the strong lead being taken by the UK Government at the United Nations Conference in Geneva in calling for significant cuts in greenhouse gas emissions by all nations; commends the Government's responsible long term approach to this and other significant sustainable development issues; further notes that this contrasts sharply with the irresponsible approach of the Labour Party, which has so little interest in environment policy that its recent Manifesto document contained not a single reference to either sustainable development or biodiversity; regrets that the only Labour figure who is discernably speaking on climate change at present is John Mortimer, who naively belittles the risks and dismisses people's concerns; but has to conclude that this is the closest anybody is likely to get to a meaningful statement of Labour Party environment policy.
