Use Of Toughened Safety Glass In Pubs And Clubs
EDM number 1183 in 1995-96, proposed by Don Touhig on 17/07/1996.
That this House notes the serious nature of injuries received in pubs and clubs from the action known as 'glassing'; further notes the lasting physical and psychological scarring which frequently results from such injuries; congratulates Professor Jonathan Shepherd of the University Medical College of Wales for his continued research into the frequency, cause and effects of injuries from annealed drinking glasses, particularly nonik pint glasses, in pubs and clubs across the United Kingdom; notes that his work demonstrates the potential of toughened safety glass to reduce the number of serious physical injuries from broken and deliberately smashed drinking glasses in pubs and clubs; congratulates the company Demaglas for deciding to produce drinking glasses from toughened glass; notes that demand for these glasses is currently outstripping supply; and urges all those involved in the licensed victuallers trade to adopt a policy of replacing broken drinking glasses with toughened safety glasses, thereby creating safer pub and club environments for both customers and staff.
