Levels Of Radiation Around Greenham Common Airbase
EDM number 1167 in 1995-96, proposed by David Rendel on 15/07/1996.
That this House approved the decision by the Government to release the report produced by Aldermaston scientists for the Ministry of Defence in 1961, which showed that there were unnaturally high levels of radiation in the area around Greenham Common, and the follow-up report produced in 1986, and the further decision to set up an information line to provide a response to those residents who are seeking reassurance or better information; further approves the decision to ask the National Radiological Protection Board to provide an independent assessment of the health implications for those living in the area; notes the high number of publicised cases of leukaemia and related diseases which have occurred in the area since 1990; and therefore calls on the Secretary of State for Health to set up a full epidemiological study with a view to discovering whether or not the area in which the reports indicate unnaturally high levels of radiation correspond to the area in which sufferers from these diseases have either lived or worked.
