Sealskin Goods
EDM number 1154 in 1995-96, proposed by Alan Meale on 11/07/1996.
That this House is concerned by the news of Department of Trade and Industry Plans to revoke the Trades Description (Sealskin Goods) Information Order 1980, which requires the labelling of any sealskin product indicating also its country of origin, dismisses the claims of the DTI which argues that the United Kingdom sealskin trade is virtually nil, a statement proven untrue by recent Norwegian official statistics which show that nearly 28,000 sealskins from that country alone were imported into the United Kingdom over the past eight years; and strongly urges Her Majesty's Government not to agree to such a change which would only lead to more seal deaths and confusion amongst the British public about which animal fur and leather goods came from.
This motion has been signed by a total of 49 MPs.
