MEDIA COVERAGE AND HONOURABLE MEMBERS' PAY

EDM number 1101 in 1995-96, proposed by Peter Bottomley on 04/07/1996.

That this House welcomes articles on the pay for parliamentarians and ministers and invites journalists and editors to add footnotes giving their own pay; notes with interest the comments of senior officials in nursing and teaching and wonders why the General Secretary of the Royal College of Nurses would take a pay cut if she were the Secretary of State for Health and why the head of a major London secondary school would lose ú25,000 on becoming an honourable Member; accepts that the number in the House of Commons after the subsequent boundary changes should be in the range of 450-500; and accepts that honourable Members' pay should not change during a Parliament except for the pension entitlements of those who retire or are defeated.
