International Co-Operative Day

That this House recognises the role of International Co-operative Day (Saturday, 6th July 1996) in drawing attention to the contribution of co-operatives in every country to creating employment, reducing poverty, empowering their members and bringing about sustainable development; endorses the recognition by the UN of the potential of co-operatives to satisfy certain of society's needs more effectively than either public or private profit making enterprises; congratulates their apex organisation, the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) with more than 760 million members worldwide, in winning increased recognition for their valuable contribution to the achievement of the economic, social and environmental goals of the UN; values the contribution of the ICA in the development of the new statement of the Co-operative Identity and in re-defining their guiding principles at its centennial Congress and General Assembly in Manchester in September 1995; and calls on all co-operative enterprises and organisations at all levels to promote new co-operatives in their own and related fields to help make tomorrow's world a better place for future generations.
