Endangered Species Protection For Basking Sharks

That this House acknowledges the report of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation which outlines the lack of interest by the scientific community and of regional fisheries bodie s in the importance of the shark in the oceanic ecosystem; notes that the current EU basking shark quota is founded on non scientific data; and calls on the Joint Nature Conservation Committee co-ordinating the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 quinquennial review to urgently prepare a case to provide basking sharks with protection for endangered species.
