Walk To School Week And Pupil Safety

EDM number 1066 in 1995-96, proposed by Nicholas Winterton on 27/06/1996.

That this House appreciates the environmental impact of unnecessary car journeys, but questions the wisdom of Travelwise and the North West Road Safety Officers Group in encouraging schools to promote a walk to school week without first ensuring that an appropriate review of crossing patrols on busy trunk roads or of police presence in the area has been under taken; and observes that the smallest injury to a child is far too high a price to pay for the publicity associated with such an environmentaly correct project.
